PDAS and Fine Arts Teachers

Research has confirmed that arts education can be effective in teaching other academic disciplines. Fine arts educators who teach the Fine Arts Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) are also simultaneously helping students learn important skills that must be demonstrated on the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS), as required on Domain VIII of the Professional Development and Appraisal System (PDAS). Rather than specifically dedicating time to teaching TAKS objectives, fine arts educators can teach the content of their specific subject area in a manner that enhances students’ abilities to master the TAKS objectives.

CEDFA has developed three documents entitled PDAS and Fine Arts Teachers for the elementary, middle school, and high school grade levels. These recommended guidelines are intended to assist campus administrators when appraising fine arts teachers in Domain VIII of the PDAS. For each grade level and fine arts content area, a side-by-side chart aligns TAKS objectives with the Fine Arts TEKS that can aid students in mastering the TAKS objectives.
