The Fine Arts in Texas State Graduation Plans
(applies to students entering grade 9 in the 1998-99 school year and thereafter)

Distinguished Achievement Program

Fine Arts None One credit which may be satisfied by any course found in 19 TAC Chapter 117 (art, music, theatre, or dance). One credit which may be satisfied by any course found in 19 TAC Chapter 117 (art, music, theatre, or dance).
Physical Education One and one-half credits (not to exceed two credits) to include Foundations of Personal Fitness (one-half credit). Can substitute drill team, marching band, cheerleading, ROTC, athletics, Dance I-IV, and certain career and technology courses. One and one-half credits (not to exceed two credits) to include Foundations of Personal Fitness (one-half credit). Can substitute drill team, marching band, cheerleading, ROTC, athletics, Dance I-IV, and certain career and technology courses. One and one-half credits (not to exceed two credits) to include Foundations of Personal Fitness (one-half credit). Can substitute drill team, marching band, cheerleading, ROTC, athletics, Dance I-IV, and certain career and technology courses.
Additional Components Five and one-half credits which are elective credits to be selected from:

--courses approved by SBOE for grades 9-12 as specified under 19 TAC §74.1 (related to Essential Knowledge and Skills, can be any of the state-approved Fine Arts courses in Art, Music, Theatre, and Dance);

--Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) (one to four credits); or

--Driver Education (one-half credit).

Three and one-half credits

Option 1:

--Math (one credit) must be Precalculus

--Science (one credit) must be selected from: Integrated Physics and Chemistry; Biology; Environmental Systems; Chemistry; AP Physics; AP Environmental Science; IB Biology; IB Chemistry; IB Physics; IB Environmental Systems; Scientific Research and Design; Anatomy and Physiology of Human Systems; Medical Microbiology; Pathophysiology; Principles of Technology I; and Principles of Technology II.

--Elective (one and one-half credits, can be any of the state-approved fine arts courses in Art, Music, Theatre, and Dance).

Option 2:

--Three and one-half credits in a coherent sequence of courses for career and technology preparation.

Option 3:

--Three and one-half credits in state-approved courses in language arts, science, social studies, mathematics, languages other than English, fine arts, or technology applications.

Three and one-half credits

Option 1:

*Distinguished Achievement Program requirements also include student achievement of four advanced measures. The measures may include original research/projects in the fine arts, fine arts test data, and college courses for credit in the arts.
