Technology in Elementary School Art:
Creating a Web page to host an online exhibit

There are numerous ways technology can support teaching and learning the TEKS for elementary school art. The following project, presented as a possibility for implementing technology in an elementary school art classroom, will hopefully inspire teachers to create new ideas and activities that meet the specific needs and resources of their students.

The Internet and the Web have provided a new way for artists to display their work and to communicate with artists and art appreciators around the world. An excellent way for elementary school students to take part in this process of creating and presenting their artwork is to guide them in creating a Web page to host an online student art exhibit. If you are unfamiliar with the how-to's of Web page construction, find another teacher or member of your community to help organize this project. Set up a Web page for your class, including students in the process when their developmental levels align with the tasks involved in creating the Web page. Over the course of the school year, guide students in the selection of work to upload to their class Web page. Incorporate discussions about the Internet and its effect on art, artists, and the business of art into lessons.

Explain to students the process of communicating via the Internet. Talk about the history of the World Wide Web, how it connects people around the world, and discuss with the class who will have access to their artwork. Enable students to take online tours of museums and galleries, giving them a sense of what others will experience visiting their Web page and introducing the Internet as a valuable resource of information on art. Visit several Web sites created just for the sake of art! Research these art sites, and talk with students about how industry influences art and how art, in turn, affects Internet design. Think carefully about the developmental levels of your students, and plan the specifics of this project to meet their individual needs and abilities. Keep in mind that the Internet is another tool to teach art and is most effective in helping students learn the Art TEKS when it supports a curriculum aligned with the TEKS.
